Navy Papers

Considering himself a pacifist, Clay nevertheless enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War. His father too, George, was a Navy man, as were Clay’s brothers, Charles and Clifford. Michael and Lester, Clifford’s sons, were also, proudly, Navy men. Clay, on the other hand, had a far-reaching imagination for his future; the Navy at that time was his way out of New Orleans and into the larger human world.
